The Company:
The Mudeungsan Producers’ Association is comprised of nine farms in Geumgok Village, located at the foot of Mudeungsan Mountain. This watermelon, which was presented to kings long ago, is still considered a very precious fruit to the people of Mudeungsan Geopark. But Mudeungsan watermelons are very difficult to cultivate compared to regular watermelons and are less profitable, so the number of farmers growing them is decreasing. The Mudeungsan Producers’ Association is making efforts to preserve this tradition by spreading its reputation and developing various products through cooperation with Mudeungsan Geopark
The Producer
Mudeungsan Watermelon, a representative product of Gwangju Metropolitan City, is a fruit that has been cultivated in the Mudeungsan Mountain area for about 400 years. In particular, it is grown at the foot of Mudeungsan Mountain only, which is over 500m high, and is harvested from late August to late fall. There are no stripes on the surface of the watermelon, so it is called “Puraeng-I”, meaning green. This Mudeungsan watermelon is famous for its large size, with the smallest growing from 5 kg to the largest growing to around 25 kg. The watermelon rind is very thick and the flesh is bright red and has white seeds.
