In 2011, Mühlberg native Peter Seifarth took over the idyllic orchard not far from Mühlburg Castle – a legacy from his grandfather that not only left him fruit-bearing trees, but also a deep connection to nature. He tended the old fruit trees with patience and dedication and expanded his knowledge in pruning courses. When he became more involved with organic farming in 2017, his path almost inevitably led him to beekeeping – a world full of buzzing, blossoms and golden treasures. He gained his first practical experience with a beekeeper friend before completing a beginners’ course at the German Bee Museum in Weimar in 2019, which enabled him to share his honey with others. Since then, the meadow handed down by his grandfather on the sunny southern slope of the Schlossleite nature reserve has been buzzing and blooming. Here, where gentle hills rise from ancient rocks, the Mühlburg castle also rests on a sandstone hilltop of the Upper Keuper – a witness to times gone by. Millions of years ago, rivers carried fine sands that were deposited layer by layer and solidified into sandstone. Hidden deeper are claystone sequences from the Middle Keuper. This ancient earth, moulded by wind and water, now bears life again. Year after year, Peter Seifarth harvests two varieties of his precious ‘Mühlberger Burghonig’, which is sold in the Mühlberg Culture Barn and at the entrance to Mühlburg Castle – a piece of fragrant, golden home, formed from blossoms, bee diligence and the deep connection between man and nature and the land that bears it.
