GEOfood Initiative Gains Further UNESCO Recognition Through IGGP Project

The GEOfood initiative continues to grow in international visibility. It recently joined a project under the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP). This milestone confirms the rising importance of linking geological heritage, local food, and sustainable development in UNESCO Global Geoparks.

GEOfood has become a leading model in recent years. It connects geosciences with local economies in a practical way. The initiative promotes food products rooted in the geological identity of each territory. As a result, it strengthens the link between landscapes, culture, and community livelihoods.

At the same time, GEOfood increases the visibility of local producers. It also supports sustainable and place-based development strategies.

The Role of Food in UNESCO Global Geoparks

UNESCO Global Geoparks protect geological heritage while promoting education and sustainable development. GEOfood adds value to this mission. It shows how geology shapes soil, influences farming practices, and defines the quality of local food.

IGGP supports this approach and confirms its global relevance. GEOfood contributes directly to key priorities such as:

  • sustainable tourism
  • biodiversity conservation
  • resilience of rural communities

Join the GEOfood Network

GEOfood invites geoparks and aspiring geoparks to join the network. Partners can explore new collaboration opportunities and expand their international reach.

By joining GEOfood, territories can:

  • increase the value of local food through geological storytelling
  • strengthen sustainable tourism strategies
  • support local producers and short supply chains
  • engage in international cooperation within the UNESCO Global Geoparks network

Looking Ahead

GEOfood continues to expand through international programmes like IGGP. It plays a growing role in shaping sustainable development rooted in local identity.

The initiative shows how geoscience, food, and communities can work together. This collaboration creates long-term value for both people and the environment.
