GEOMÔN UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK

Country:

GeoMôn UNESCO Global Geopark is a UNESCO-designated geopark that covers the whole island of Anglesey (Ynys Môn) and its surrounding coastal waters in northwest Wales. Recognized as part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, it is renowned for its exceptional geological diversity, preserving a record of nearly 1.8 billion years of Earth history within a relatively small area.

The geopark contains ancient rocks, fossils, volcanic remnants, folded strata, and evidence of past tectonic activity that helped scientists understand the geological evolution of the British Isles. Its spectacular coastal cliffs, beaches, and rocky headlands provide outstanding opportunities to observe geological processes and landscapes.

Beyond geology, GeoMôn celebrates the island’s rich cultural heritage, including prehistoric monuments, maritime traditions, and mining history. The geopark supports conservation, scientific research, environmental education, and sustainable tourism while encouraging local communities to benefit from and protect their natural heritage.
